Congress Ave (map)(transit) The Downtown Austin Alliance and KUT 90.5 FM invite visitors to start their holidays downtown on Saturday, December 5 during the annual Holiday Sing-Along and Downtown Stroll! The evening starts at 6:00 p.m. when crowds gather on the south steps of the Capitol to sing the songs of the season during John Aielli's Holiday Sing-Along. At 7 p.m., the countdown begins to the lighting of the Capitol tree. From 7:00 -- 9:00 p.m. Congress Avenue will be buzzing with holiday cheer during the Congress Avenue Stroll. Shops, restaurants, galleries and museums will be open late and will feature special activities, offers or refreshments to visitors. Performances from The Invincible Czars, Jeff Lofton, Minor Mishap Marching Band, Myrna Cabello, Knights of Steel, Sherry Gingras and the Drumsistas, Bel Coure Saxophone Quartet, Clickety Cloggers, the Austin Bike Zoo and many more along Congress Avenue will be sure to delight children of all ages. Visitors are asked to support fellow m! embers of the community by bringing a sealed can of peanut butter to the Capitol Christmas tree for Caritas of Austin. Events are free and open to the public. |

The annual Veterans' Day Parade will be held on November 11, 2009 in downtown Austin. The event kicks off at 9 a.m. from the Ann Richards Congress Avenue Bridge and travels up to the Capitol Building. Viewing is available all along Congress Avenue. A ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. at the South Capitol steps. This year's theme for the Travis County and City of Austin Veterans' Day Parade and Memorial Ceremony at the South Steps of the State Capitol will be honoring "Families of Veterans and Active Duty Military." A special flyover is scheduled for the start of the Memorial Ceremony, at 11 a.m., performed by the Commemorative Air Force from San Marcos, TX. PLEASE NOTE: This parade takes place on a weekday and affects traffic on Congress Avenue and all cross streets. 6:30 a.m. - 11:59 a.m.:
- Ann Richards Bridge 9:00 a.m. - noon:
- Congress Avenue, between Cesar Chavez and 11th
- Cross streets between Congress and Colorado
- Cross streets between Congress and Brazos All affected streets will reopen as the parade passes, most likely before noon. |
